Tokyo High Court Rejects Appeal in Linear Chuo Shinkansen Construction Case

On October 22, 2025, the Tokyo High Court upheld a lower court ruling, rejecting an appeal by residents in Minami-Alps, Yamanashi Prefecture, who sought to halt construction on the Linear Chuo Shinkansen project. The residents argued that the construction was damaging their land and violating their rights, but the court found no illegal activity.

The Kofu District Court had earlier ruled in May 2024 that the project was of significant national importance, citing its potential to improve international competitiveness and enhance disaster preparedness. It also dismissed concerns over noise and vibration from construction, confirming that there was no legal basis for an injunction or compensation.

The Tokyo High Court’s decision further solidifies the legal standing of the controversial infrastructure project, which is part of Japan’s plans for a new high-speed rail system.
