A safe levitation system is a prerequisite for Hyperloop approval, a comfortable levitation system is expected by passengers, and a highly available levitation system is demanded by operators. All three aspects are defined in standards and laws. In this workshop, we will demonstrate how these goals were achieved with the Transrapid System in Shanghai. It operates at speeds of up to 500 km/h and has a punctuality rate of over 99.89%. This was accomplished despite the use of electronic components with standard failure rates only. We will also discuss how early design decisions affect the difficulty of achieving high ride comfort. The workshop will explain the design process in accordance with functional safety standards and norms.
