  Prof. Dr. Vladimir Shmatchenko and his team focused on the following key areas of research and educational activities:

  • Modeling and design of technical systems;
  • Technical regulation, particularly for RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety) and security, and its implementation;
  • Business management systems (ISO/TS 22163 (IRIS) standard);
  • Safety management systems;
  • Digital railway radio (implementation of EIRENE requirements through GSM-R, TETRA, and DMR systems in railway operations);
  • Typical special requirements for EMS passenger maglev systems;
  • Magnetic levitation and lateral stabilization based on permanent magnet assemblies.

  Through their expertise, Prof. Shmatchenko and his team made significant contributions to major projects in Russia, including:

  • Saint-Petersburg–Moscow high-speed line;
  • Moscow–Kazan high-speed line;
  • Ekaterinburg–Chelyabinsk high-speed line;
  • Implementation of the IRIS standard in railway industry enterprises;
  • Implementation of safety management systems in operational enterprises of Russian Railways;
  • Development of a technical regulation system for a Russian maglev transportation system;
  • Investigation of magnetic fields in permanent magnet assemblies.

   

Prof. Dr. Vladimir Shmatchenko passed away on March 8, 2026. His dedication and scholarly work continue to influence the field of railway engineering and maglev research.
