"Rising Expectations for the Linear Chuo Shinkansen: Public Perception and Urban Redevelopment Outlook in Nagoya (2025 Survey)"

Backgorund info:

Survey Overview: 2025 Nagoya Linear Chuo Shinkansen Perception Study
Methodology & Sample
Survey Method: Conducted online using an external survey panel.
Timing: July 2025.

Participants: 101 respondents (50 male, 51 female) residing in Aichi Prefecture, aged between 20 and 69 years old.

Note (IMB): From a scientific point of view, this is a very small survey. Given the number of sub-questions and details, its representativeness is questionable. It could therefore be more of a marketing measure than a reliable study.

Location and Scope
Targeted residents in the four zones around Nagoya Station: East, West, South, and North districts. This was a fixed-point survey following a comparable study in 2024, employing identical questions and focus areas for year-over-year comparison.

Objectives & Context
To assess how residents perceive emerging redevelopment and the upcoming Linear Chuo Shinkansen. Key areas of interest included:
Expectation of the Shinkansen’s opening
Future usage intent
Anticipated benefits for Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya City’s attractiveness
Desired urban redevelopment features
District-specific preferences and trends

Produced by Togaru Co., Ltd., a communication design firm based in Nagoya (CEO: Yutaka Kojima), aimed at aiding urban planning, local communities, and relevant stakeholders with actionable insights.

Summary of results:

A 2025 follow-up survey by Togaru Co., Ltd. examined public attitudes toward the planned Linear Chuo Shinkansen, scheduled to open from 2027 onward, across the four districts surrounding Nagoya Station. Compared to 2024, positive expectations have risen: 56.6% now express optimism about the project, up from 47.6%. Interest in actually using the service has also grown, from 48.6% to 55.5%, driven by anticipated improvements in connectivity to Tokyo and Osaka and enhanced local access.

Residents’ hopes for the station area’s redevelopment focus primarily on better public transport and road access (55.4%) and the creation of public plazas and interaction spaces (37.6%). The desire for Nagoya to become a vibrant hub attracting domestic and international visitors has strengthened, alongside calls for a safe and livable urban environment.

District-specific trends include: the East retaining strong expectations for Tokyo access; the West showing increased enthusiasm for redevelopment; the South prioritizing safety and livability amid growing residential development; and the North seeking both improved convenience and community revitalization.

While optimism is rising, concerns remain over the feasibility of an early opening and ticket pricing. Togaru’s CEO notes that tangible construction progress and clearer urban planning have helped residents envision the future city more vividly, potentially making the project a catalyst for major urban transformation in Nagoya.
