Researchers at Donghu Laboratory in Hubei Province have accelerated a 1.1-ton maglev test vehicle to 650 km/h in just seven seconds over 600 meters, setting a new global record for short-track maglev propulsion.
The breakthrough was achieved on a self-developed 1,000-meter test line using advanced magnetic levitation and electromagnetic propulsion. “This is the fastest speed reached under such conditions,” said Li Weichao, Director of the High-Speed Maglev Electromagnetic Propulsion Technology Innovation Center.
Unlike traditional long-track tests (30–40 km), this setup relies on short-distance acceleration with ultra-precise speed and position tracking—currently accurate to 4 mm. The system uses like-pole magnetic repulsion to levitate the vehicle, eliminating contact and allowing it to overcome only aerodynamic drag.
While 650 km/h marks a major milestone, the track is designed for operational speeds up to 800 km/h. Full construction is expected by year-end, with the platform ready for formal evaluation.
The vehicle can decelerate to zero within 200 meters, making the system ideal for high-speed research and development. Li noted the technologies are already being deployed in other labs and hold strong potential for civilian applications.
