Chubu Region: A New Start in the Era of the Linear Shinkansen, Aiming for a ¥280 Trillion Economic Zone

The Chubu region, located in the heart of Japan, is poised to increase its prominence. Urban areas around Nagoya are advancing urban development in anticipation of the upcoming Linear Chuo Shinkansen. This high-speed rail project is expected to revolutionize transportation between Tokyo and Nagoya, cutting travel time to just 40 minutes. As part of this transformation, the region is preparing for large-scale international events, such as sports tournaments, which are expected to generate significant economic activity and urban vibrancy.

In July, JR Central introduced the new "M10" test vehicle on the Yamanashi Linear experimental line, marking the first new train model in five years. The Linear Shinkansen promises not only faster travel but also reduced energy consumption and lower operational costs.

As the project progresses, the Chubu region is set to become a major economic hub, targeting the creation of a ¥280 trillion economic zone (approx. $1.9 trillion / €1.8 trillion). The area's growing infrastructure and connectivity will support its rise as a center of innovation and international exchange.

Great news but they need to showcase a SC maglev container train in Australia so they can easily sell it to big countries.

Shizuoka Governor Yasutomo Suzuki exchanged views with an economic organization made up of companies from five prefectures in the Chubu region. The discussions included startup support and related measures.

Participants included Satoru Katsuno, chairman of Chubu Electric Power and chairman of the Chubu Economic Federation, and Yasuhiro Tsuge, adviser to JR Central and vice chairman of the federation. Suzuki and Shizuoka Prefecture vice governors attended from the prefectural side.

In his opening remarks, Suzuki referred to the Chuo Shinkansen maglev issue: “[Translated quote] It has already been more than two years since I took office, and during this time I have managed prefectural government with an emphasis on speed and a management perspective. The issue of the Shizuoka section of the maglev has also been resolved safely, and we will continue to watch the construction status through the monitoring system.”

The Chubu Economic Federation has set out a regional vision for 2050 that makes use of the “Japan Central Corridor” linking Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, to be completed through the opening of the Chuo Shinkansen.

Katsuno said: “[Translated quote] Following the approval granted for the start of construction in the Shizuoka section, we will promote initiatives that lead to broader exchange, including Shizuoka Prefecture, and to the revitalization of the regional economy, through further cooperation with municipalities along the line and related organizations with the opening in view.”

In the closed-door discussion, cooperation was discussed on policies including startup support and innovation creation, areas in which Suzuki has been actively engaged.
