Shizuoka Prefecture formally announced on July 14 that it will sign the Natural Environment Conservation Agreement with JR Central on July 18 for the Chuo Shinkansen maglev Shizuoka section. The agreement includes continuous environmental monitoring and provisions for responding to unforeseen events.
A signing ceremony will be held at the prefectural office on July 18 afternoon, attended by Governor Yasutomo Suzuki, JR Central President Shunsuke Niwa, MLIT Vice Minister Satoshi Mizushima, and local leaders from the Oigawa River basin and Shizuoka City. The prefecture will establish a Chuo Shinkansen subcommittee to receive JR Central reports and consultations. Governor Suzuki approved construction on July 7, ending the section’s status as the only unstarted stretch between Tokyo–Shinagawa and Nagoya. While local governments and economic circles anticipate economic benefits, environmental concerns persist.
