I was going through a few discussions about North American projects and noticed that construction costs are often quoted, while the final cost can be quite different once factors such as infrastructure, land acquisition and operating costs are taken into account.
This got me wondering whether there are relatively simple methods for obtaining an estimate that is as close as possible to the actual cost of a project. And also whether there is a way to compare the initial project estimate with a more comprehensive estimate that includes infrastructure, land acquisition, operation and maintenance costs.

The potential applications for the meaningful and efficient use of urban maglev systems have been intensively studied in recent years.
Overall, maglev trains often appear well-suited for improving mobility in metropolises, particularly in the low-to-medium speed range, such as airport connectors and urban circular lines. They can also serve as a viable alternative to subways and commuter rail systems. As a general rule: The potential suitability must always be examined for each specific project. Another general finding is that urban maglev systems are usually not well-suited as replacements for trams.
Furthermore, the infrastructure construction costs for maglev systems in urban or regional contexts are roughly comparable to those of commuter rail systems (S-Bahnen) and subways (U-Bahnen), and sometimes even lower. However, the real advantages often become evident in significantly reduced operating costs (due to low wear and tear) and high environmental quality (low noise levels, no particulate emissions, and minimal vibrations).
