JR Tokai held a briefing session for local residents on Aug. 29, 2021, to begin trial digging in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, over the construction of an underground tunnel for the Linear Central Shinkansen (Maglev). The station and tunnel will be excavated 40 meters or more below the surface. Shinagawa Ward will be the first location to start trial digging.
According to JR Tokai, a shield machine brought in to the vertical hole in Kita-Shinagawa 4-chome, Shinagawa Ward, will be used to dig about 300 meters to the southwest. Directly above the course are the sites of JR Tokai and outside companies, roads and rivers, and no residences, the company said. JR Tokai wants to test and confrim whether the planned construction method can be used to excavate the site safely, and examine whether groundwater and building foundations will be affected.
The results of the trial excavation will then be reported at another residents' briefing. Full-scale excavation is expected to start in 2022 or later.
