Here comes the latest Transport Newsletter of the International Maglev Board, this time focusing on the worldwide Hyperloop research activities and the question of the future suitability of these developments.
Hyperloop: Is its use in the long-distance passenger transport sector possible and sensible?
Students at the Technical University of Deggendorf (Germany), in collaboration with the International Maglev Board, are investigating the question of the future suitability of Hyperloop technologies. One goal is to gather the transport industry's view of Hyperloop concepts.
So far, the public discussion has been dominated by marketing information from various companies. It is therefore necessary to ask from a scientific perspective how realistic such information really is. How do the transportation industry, transportation scientists, engineers and potential operators therefore assess the prospects of Hyperloop concepts?
Are Hyperloop systems practical - or unrealistic?
Is there a sensible balance between potential benefits and costs?
Are Hyperloop technologies as a whole sensible - or dispensable?
The students have created an (anonymous) survey in three languages to explore views and evaluations. The students appreciate participation in the survey, which will help them in their research.
The IMB welcomes forwarding info about the survey to interested, appropriate groups of people. Student perspectives are also strongly encouraged. The results of the survey will be published in late summer 2021 via this IMB newsletter.

No further decisions have yet been made regarding the Maglev 2021 conference in China.

Dr. Andrey Galenko is an electrical engineer and chief designer of Maglev transport with electric linear drive at JSC Engineering Scientific Center "TEMP". Dr. Galenko was responsible for the development of the Soviet maglev systems TP-02 in 1979 and TP-05 in 1986. He served as chief designer for the lLnearmotor project Sheremetyevo-Moscow, carriage B250 - 1992. He also served as chief designer for the Moscow monorail project with linear drive.
All documents can be downloaded as pdf documents on the scientific platform Researchgate.net via the IMB website under the links mentioned in each case. All scientific studies and reports follow the open access principle and are thus available free of charge.
The International Maglev Board (IMB) is an international, non-profit organization that deals with mobility, transportation and - as a focus - maglev technologies. The IMB is located in Europe, in Munich, Germany and is recognized by the Free State of Bavaria as a non-profit organization.
The International Maglev Board consists of internationally recognized transportation scientists, engineers, experts and members of NGOs. It is an independent, scientifically oriented non-profit society that is not tied to any particular maglev technology, nor to any industrial companies.
